Attractions of Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela

The festivals in India are unique and amazing. One of them is the Kumbh Mela, which is said to be the oldest religious festival in the world. It is one of the most sacred festivals for the Hindus. It is believed that by taking bath in the holy Ganges River during the auspicious time will cleanse all your sins, and your path to nirvana will become clear.

The complete or Maha Kumbh Mela takes place at every 12 years while the Ardh (half) Kumbh Mela takes place at a gap of six years. Kumbh is celebrated in one of these four cities - Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The timing and location of the Kumbh Mela are pre-calculated and depends on the planetary positions of Sun and the Jupiter. The festival lasts for 35-40 days, and numerous holy rituals take place during the Mela.

In the last Kumbh Mela, more than 60 million devotees took a dip in the holy Ganges River. The next one is a Purna Kumbh Mela and will be celebrated in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh in February 2013.
